Throughout modern Iranian history, culture has served as a means of imposing unity and cohesion onto society. The Pahlavi monarchs used it to project an image of Iran as an ancient civilization re-emerging as an equal to Western nations, while the revolutionaries deployed it to remake the country into an Islamic nation.

This presentation examines the pervasiveness of the impulse among Iranians to maintain a narrow definition of Iranian cultural identity in opposition to all other attempts at self-definition. The contested claims to culture can tell us about our understanding of the concept of culture and how we might rethink it.

Nasrin Rahimieh is Howard Baskerville Professor of Humanities in the Department of Comparative Literature at University of California, Irvine. She served as Maseeh Chair and Director of the Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture from 2006 to 2014. She was elected and served as President of the International Society for Iranian Studies from 2006 to 2008.
